A partnership that named itself.

The story in the bottle

First, they broke the blend.

About two decades ago, The Prisoner arrived as an unconventional mix of California grape varieties and helped change what drinkers expected from a red blend.

The company built outward from that first wine with blends and labels that resist the safe, expected answer. Today, its winemaking team works with more than 100 growers across Northern California, bringing together fruit and ideas that tradition might have kept apart.

That approach feels familiar. TCF is built around looking closely, questioning easy conclusions, and finding the human story inside systems that can otherwise feel rigid.

The label

Art that refuses to look away.

The company’s name and flagship label were inspired by Le Petit Prisonnier, an etching by Spanish artist Francisco Goya. The work belongs to his Disasters of War series, created as a protest against brutality and injustice.

The Prisoner says that confronting oppression, including problems tied to prisons and policing, is part of its identity. You do not have to agree with every position to understand why a brand willing to start that conversation catches the attention of a courtroom audience.

Why it fits TCF

The name opened the door. The story earned the room.

01

Questions of power

The label begins with custody, injustice, and what institutions can do to human beings. Those are not abstract subjects around here.

02

Creative rule-breaking

The winery made its reputation by combining grapes and ideas that convention said should stay separate.

03

A story worth sharing

When the day’s hearings are over, a bottle with a real history makes for a better conversation than one with only a clever label.

A note from Dan

No invented tasting notes.

“The name got me. The story kept me reading. I have not tasted these wines yet, so this page is not a tasting review. I intend to order, and I’ll update this page once I can give you a firsthand opinion. Until then, judge the bottle and the story for yourself.”
